“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.”

Ever heard of an Atlatl ? Now you have.

A deer-hunting first in Missouri

Luke Boenker of Maryland Heights, Mo., made Missouri deer-hunting history on the opening day of the firearms season.

He became the first hunter using an atlatl, a primitive spear-launching weapon, to take a deer in the state.

The weapon became a legal hunting method last year, but the Missouri Department of Conservation said that no one had taken a deer with it in 2010.

Boenker found success on Nov. 12 this season, hunting from a tree stand in St. Louis County.

A day later, Scott Rorebeck of Trenton, Mo., became the second hunter in the state to take a deer with the atlatl, hunting in Grundy County.

Here is a random example of some Atlatl chucking......... enjoy...

For the record killing a deer with an atlatl is nearly as difficult as Uncle Dick catching a trout using a fly rod.
